Ingredients

Scale

For the Brownies:

  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

For the Tiramisu Layer:

  • 1 cup (240ml) strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 3 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional, can substitute with more coffee)
  • 8 oz (225g) mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
  • ⅓ cup (40g) powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking pan with parchment paper, ensuring some overhang for easy removal later.
  2. Melt butter and combine with sugar: In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Remove from heat once melted, then stir in the granulated sugar until the mixture is fully combined. Allow it to cool slightly to avoid cooking the eggs in the next step.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla: Mix in eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition to ensure a smooth batter. Stir in the vanilla extract to infuse flavor.
  4. Mix dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder to ensure even distribution.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually incorporate the dry mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined to avoid overmixing, which can toughen the brownies.
  6. Bake the brownies: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs. Remove from oven and cool completely on a wire rack in the pan.
  7. Prepare the coffee soak: In a shallow dish, mix the cooled brewed coffee with the coffee liqueur if using; this will add that signature tiramisu flavor.
  8. Whip cream and mascarpone: In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Gently fold in the softened mascarpone cheese until smooth and well combined.
  9. Soak and layer: Once the brownies are fully cooled, quickly and lightly soak them with the coffee mixture, taking care not to let them get soggy. Evenly spread the mascarpone mixture over the brownie base to create the tiramisu layer.
  10. Chill and dust: Dust the top with a generous layer of unsweetened cocoa powder. Refrigerate the assembled brownies for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the mascarpone layer to set.
  11. Serve: Use the parchment paper overhang to lift the chilled brownies out of the pan. Cut into 12-16 squares and serve chilled for a perfect tiramisu-inspired dessert experience.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the coffee liqueur and use additional brewed coffee instead.
  • Ensure the brownies are completely cooled before adding the tiramisu layer to prevent it from melting or becoming runny.
  • If mascarpone is unavailable, cream cheese can be substituted, though it will slightly alter the flavor profile.
  • Use strong brewed coffee for a bolder flavor or espresso for even more intensity.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
