Beef Marinade
- 1 lb (450g) beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
- 1 tbsp (15g) grated fresh ginger
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp (15g) soy sauce
- 1 tbsp (15g) oyster sauce (optional)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Sauce
- 2 tbsp (30g) soy sauce
- 2 tbsp (30g) oyster sauce (optional)
- 2 tbsp (30g) hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp (30g) rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp (15g) cornstarch
Vegetables & Cooking Oils
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp (30g) vegetable oil (for cooking beef)
- 1 tbsp (15g) vegetable oil (for cooking onions)
- 2 tbsp (30g) vegetable oil (additional, for searing if needed)
- Prepare the Steak: In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Toss the beef strips in this marinade and let them sit for 10-15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Cook the Onions: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they become soft and slightly caramelized, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then remove the onions from the pan and set aside.
- Sear the Beef: In the same skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over high heat. Add the marinated beef strips and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they are browned but still tender.
- Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (if using), 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, and 1 tablespoon cornstarch until smooth.
- Simmer the Beef with Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the beef in the skillet. Stir well and let it simmer on medium heat until the sauce thickens and coats the beef evenly, about 2-3 minutes.
- Combine & Serve: Add the sautéed onions back into the pan and stir to combine everything well. Serve the sizzling pepper steak hot over steamed rice or noodles for a delicious Chinese-inspired dinner.
Notes
- For extra heat, add sliced fresh bell peppers or chili peppers with the onions.
- If you prefer a gluten-free version, substitute soy sauce with tamari and ensure oyster sauce is gluten-free or omit it.
- Letting the beef marinate longer, up to 30 minutes, enhances the flavor.
- Use a wok or a heavy-bottomed skillet for better stir-frying results.
- Adjust salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
