Delicious ham and cheese rolls made with soft pizza dough, layered with savory ham and melted Swiss or Provolone cheese, then baked to golden perfection and finished with a sweet and tangy honey mustard poppy seed glaze. Perfect for appetizers, lunch, or game day snacks.

Ingredients

Scale

Rolls

  • 1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 8 large slices ham
  • 8 slices Swiss or Provolone cheese

Glaze

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Remove pizza dough from the refrigerator about 20 minutes before starting to allow it to come to room temperature for easier handling.
  2. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease an 8 x 8-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  3. Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle about 16 inches by 8 inches, using the baking dish as a size guide.
  4. Layer fillings: Place the 8 slices of ham evenly over the dough, followed by 8 slices of Swiss or Provolone cheese, ensuring they are in a single layer without overlapping.
  5. Form the roll: Starting from the edge closest to you, roll the dough tightly into a log so the ham and cheese are inside. Use a serrated knife to cut the roll into 9 even slices and arrange them upright in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake initially: Bake the rolls uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes until cooked through and lightly golden on top. Check by peeling back a layer to ensure the center is not doughy.
  7. Make the glaze: Melt the butter in the microwave or on the stovetop. Whisk in Dijon mustard, honey, and poppy seeds until fully combined.
  8. Glaze the rolls: Brush the honey mustard glaze evenly over the top of the rolls, then return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes until deep golden brown.
  9. Serve: Enjoy the rolls warm or at room temperature for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can assemble the rolls a day ahead in the baking pan, cover tightly, and refrigerate. They may require 5 extra minutes of baking time when baked directly from the fridge.
  • Use a serrated knife for clean and even slices when cutting the roll.
  • Swiss or Provolone cheese can be substituted with your preferred melting cheese.
  • Ensure pizza dough is at room temperature before rolling for easier handling and better texture.
